Forceful and deeply moving mining drama that provided the legendary American singer/actor Paul Robeson with what was undoubtedly his best British film role. An unemployed ship’s stoker (Robeson) arrives in a small Welsh mining village looking for work and wins the hearts of the local community through both his attempts to save the pit from closure and his singing in the miners’ choir.
