Film Screening: Art & Activism at the Heart of the Coalfields
Last year, we worked with young people from local schools and youth clubs on Art & Activism at the Heart of the Coalfields, a project dedicated to capturing the voices and stories of our mining communities before they’re lost to time. Through digital storytelling and banner-making workshops, participants interviewed elders, explored the visual language of protest, and learned about the activism that shaped the Swansea Valley.
In November, the project culminated in a powerful celebration event, bringing together film, performance, exhibitions, workshops, and community activity to showcase the young people’s work. At the heart of that evening was the premiere of the documentary film, created from months of interviews and creative collaboration.
Following requests from those who were unable to attend the original screening, we’re offering another opportunity to watch our documentary film on the big screen. This event is a film screening only, focusing on the voices, memories, and activism at the heart of our coalfields.
This project has been made possible thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, marking 40 years since the end of the Miners’ Strike and over 90 years since The Welfare was built with the miners’ own pennies.
