Friday Fright Night: Protein (18)

“DEAD MAN’S SHOES with aspects of HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, PROTEIN is a fantastic example of modern British filmmaking and a fascinating study of a broken and depraved mind.” ****
The Hollywood News

A gym-obsessed serial killer murders and eats a local drug dealer for their protein, inadvertently sparking a brutal and bloodthirsty tit-for-tat turf war between rival drug gangs.

Based on his 2014 short film of the same name, PROTEIN is the feature film debut of award-winning writer/director Tony Burke and offers a compelling blend of blackly-comic small-town crime thriller, nuanced character drama and grisly cannibal horror. The film premiered to rave reviews and an incredibly enthusiastic audience reaction at London’s FrightFest 2024.

Produced by and starring Welsh actor Craig Russell, alongside a host of Welsh talent including Steven Meo (both of whom grew up locally before launching national acting careers), the cast also features Kezia Burrows, Charles Dale, Richard Mylan, and Kai Owen.

Filmed in Wales and packed with dark humour and homegrown grit, this ferociously original British indie is a must for fans of Dead Man’s Shoes, Kill List and Tony.

Running Time: 92 minutes

PROTEIN contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect customers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.
